Director of Programming

At BigHouse, we are committed to providing essential resources and building meaningful relationships with foster and adoptive families across East Alabama. As the Director of Programming, you will play a key role in both, working alongside the Executive Director and Director of Development to ensure families receive much-needed support while fostering connection and community.

The ideal Director of Programming at BigHouse is a strong, people-focused leader with experience managing volunteers, interns, and program staff. This role oversees the planning and execution of BigHouse programming and events and ensures our volunteer systems are organized, efficient, and welcoming. A client-first mindset, strong communication skills, and a heart for serving families are essential. The right candidate will bring creativity, teamwork, and a passion for growth to help expand BigHouse’s impact and ensure everyone feels valued and welcomed.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Nonprofit Management, Communications, or a related field (or equivalent relevant experience).

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in program coordination, volunteer management, or community engagement.

  • Prior experience supervising or managing volunteers, interns, or staff.

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple programs and priorities simultaneously.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.

  • Experience building and maintaining relationships with community partners and external stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in Google Workspace or comparable program.

  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends as needed for programming and events.

  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a nonprofit organization, particularly one serving children and families.

  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles.

  • Experience planning and executing large-scale events or seasonal drives.

  • Comfort with public speaking and group facilitation.

  • Creative problem-solving abilities and a proactive mindset.

  • Personal or professional connection to foster care, adoption, or child welfare is a plus.


Key Responsibilities:

Resource Coordination

  • This role provides leadership and coordination for key BigHouse programs and events, including the Boutique, food box distribution and seasonal resource drives.

Volunteer Management

  • This role oversees the recruitment, management, training and oversight of volunteers to ensure effective support across all BigHouse programs and events.

Program Execution

  • This role leads the planning and execution of youth and family programming, including Kids’ Night Out, summer events, and general support for BigHouse initiatives.


Expectations:

The Director of Programming is a full-time, salaried position requiring a core schedule of 32 set hours per week, typically Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. In addition, the role includes evening and weekend commitments throughout the month to support events and programs, with flexible hours allocated to accommodate these responsibilities.
