Clothes Closet

What kinds of clothes do you accept?

We take new and gently used children's and teen's clothing, shoes and accessories for the current season. Due to space limitations we cannot hold on to very much off-season clothing, so if possible, donate the clothing in season. Jeans are accepted year-round. We do not keep used socks, underwear, or heavily worn items. We keep what we can of adult sizes if it something a teen will likely wear.

Do you take toys, baby items, household items, and furniture?

We keep a lot of baby items, occasional household items, and whatever furniture we can store that we think families can use. If you have a large item (appliance, sofa, trampoline, etc.) that you would like to donate to one of our families, please call or email us for more info. We keep new toys in our birthday closet, and we keep a few used toys in our playroom. Some larger/nicer toys or household items we will take pictures of and post for our families to pick up if they want them. Smaller used toys or household items that we can't use use will be passed on to the thrift store.

Who can volunteer in the Clothes Closet?

This depends on the current need for volunteers, but typically anyone high-school age and older can volunteer for the Clothes Closet. We also have small groups of 3-10 people come occasionally.

If you receive items that you can't use, which thrift store do you give them to?

Items that we cannot use we pass along to Shop Smart Thrift Store located at 804 Columbus Pkwy. in Opelika. They are one of our monthly donors.

What opportunities do you have for volunteers?

Volunteers are needed to help with our Clothes Closet (weekly), Kids' Night Out (monthly), and special events (occasionally). Click on the links for more information about those specific areas. We have also had volunteer groups do projects for BigHouse families at their home (lawn work, painting, roofing, etc).

What age does a volunteer need to be?

Age of volunteers depends on the program and task. Typically, high school age and older is most helpful. Younger volunteers with adult helpers (Boy/Girl Scouts, church groups etc.) can be useful for certain tasks, just ask!

Can I volunteer for class credit or court-ordered community service?

We welcome students who need class credit; just be aware that most volunteering is either done during our office hours in our Clothes Closet or for special events. You'll need to plan ahead and contact us to make sure you can get in all of your hours in the timeframe needed. We do not accept volunteers for court-ordered community service.
